Army officer rank was originally given :

  - Pursuant to Articles 6 and 9 of Act 109 / SL / L11 of May 31, 1958 stipulating the rank and rank system and the right to rank and rank for officers of the Vietnam People's Army;
  - Pursuant to Decree No. 306 / TTG of June 20, 1958 stipulating the rank and rank of the official payroll of officers of the People's Army of Vietnam;
  - At the proposals of the Chief of General Staff, the Chairman of the General Department of Politics, the Chairman of the General Staff Department, the Head of the General Department of Training, the Chairman of the General Department of Logistics,

This was further updated by later regulations.
